BootCamp. Apple. MacBook Pro. WinXP. Stir gently, serve fresh.
I've been working in the belly of a large corporation for, oh, about forever. It happens to be one of the WinXP/AD/Exchange only crowd(aren't they all?). I've had Macs since the OS X days(also had several dating back to 1984) and as most of the general Mac users would agree, I've longed for the day that my sweet hardware could be the ONLY hardware I needed. I know about Virtual PC, too slow for serious use. I know about Remote Desktop, can go belly up and lock you out for 1 hour should the right phases of the moon occur. That does not build confidence. None of those solutions addressed my need completely.
Now back to the lead paragraph. I now have a real, bonafide (from the budget/convenience perspective) reason to purchase another Mac laptop. I am tired of missing my Powerbook for key duties while in the borgland. I am tired of lugging TWO laptops to cover all bases. With Apple's intro of BootCamp, it is just enough push to get me in the Apple store. From all accounts I've read to date, this puppy will give me the flexibility I need to live with one laptop. Next step for Apple, which is already being talked about on the intarwebs, is to remove the dual boot requirement and allow virtualization with near native speeds. I am not talking one-quarter speed like Virtual PC, I am needing 80-95% of native. If they reach that, they have removed ANY need for me to consider ANY other hardware.
Yes, I know about Parallel's new announcement. But Apple has a funny way of suddenly devaluing a good product by bringing the capability into the core OS. I will wait patiently with Apple's dual boot until they do the virtualization I expect them to.
I am off to buy my new MacBook Pro……….in a few more weeks……..go Apple….
